Essential region
This is the DNA region of the locus that should minimally be sequenced before allele assignment can take place. For HLA class I genes, the current essential region encompasses exons 2 and 3. For HLA class II the essential region is exon 2. This relates to the most polymorphic regions in the HLA protein that present the antigens (see picture below).
