Prof. dr. Frans Claas

We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden loss of Prof. Frans Claas.
As founding member of EFI, Prof. Claas made an immense impact on the field of H&I. His expertise and view were invaluable, and his dedication to sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration played an important role in shaping the HLA community. Prof. Claas was for a long time respected member of our GenDx Scientific Advisory Board and as such a source of inspiration for GenDx, and our founders. His contributions and presence will be deeply missed. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues during this sad time.
It is with great sadness that EFI heard about the sudden death of our dear friend and colleague Prof. Frans Claas, aged 73 years. He passed away suddenly on Sunday 2nd February 2025 while on holiday in South Africa.
Frans was a founder member of EFI and a true ambassador for H&I, serving as EFI President between 2002-2004. but he also chaired the Scientific Committee, and edited the EFI Newsletter for many years. Frans also worked tirelessly with Europdonor (Matchis), Eurotransplant, the Dutch Transplantation Foundation, Eurocord and ASHI.
Above all, Frans was supremely generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise worldwide and was a great believer in the strength of international collaboration.
Our thoughts and sincere condolences extend to Frans’s wife, Ilse, and family, also to his colleagues and close friends throughout the world at this difficult time.
